Nick Saban

Nick Saban has plenty of reason to smile

Man, is it nice to be college football Alabama Crimson Tide coach Nick Saban.

Looking at some of the perks in Nick Saban’s contract (obtained by the New York Times), it is easy to see why there is little chance of Nick Saban switching teams.  The perks include:

  1. $400,000 bonus – 2012 BCS Title win.
  2. $200,000 bonus – playing Title game.
  3. $4.62 million – total compensation before bonuses.
  4. $3.92 million – talent fee included in compensation
  5. $225,000 – base salary
  6. $533,333 retention bonus (payable annually)
  7. $100,000 if Football graduation rate in top 25% of SEC
  8. Saban and immediate family has business and personal use of 2 full sized cars with operating costs and insurance paid.
  9. Use of noncommercial plane for 25 hours a year.

10. Use of 15 seat luxury box and 22 luxury box tickets for football games, 12 general admission season tickets, and free tickets to Alabama sporting events.

  1. 11.   His entire annual base salary and talent fee for the remaining contract.

His current contract extends to 2017, keeping him in Tuscaloosa for quite a while, although I have read there is no “buyout” clause in his contract – allowing him to jump ship without penalty.  But let’s see what the Alabama Crimson Tide has gotten for their money.

  1. A 50-12 record in 6 years (they were 26-23 the 4 years prior with Mike Shula)
  2. 2 National Championships (2010, 2012)
  3. 2 Heisman Candidates (Trent Richardson, Mark Ingram)
  4. 1 Heisman Winner (Mark Ingram)
  5. AP Coach of the Year (2008)
  6. 4-2 in Bowl Games
  7. 18 former Alabama Crimson Tide players in the NFL (that Saban coached)

Add in the turnaround in Tuscaloosa.  I have heard from Crimson Tide alumni that Tuscaloosa is a better, more vibrant place since Saban came to town, with the Sabans donating a large amount of money to improve the parks and public areas around the area.  And when Tuscaloosa was devastated by tornadoes in April of 2011, Nick Saban and his players were on the scene to render aid to the victims.
